We then happily braved the cold to walk to Claire's house 5 minutes away without any moaning or whining, had a few pre-drinks, scanned the internet for free entry nightclubs after midnight, and ended up in the Odeon.  Cheap drinks and cheesy dancing, what more could a girl want? Maybe a load of hideous photos on Facebook to comemeorate the night?  Done!

LMS head out tonight for dinner, drinks and dancing!!

Hi All,

LMS are celebrating the end of their very first season by going out on the town tonight (Friday 26th).  We will be doing dinner and our own awards earlier in the evening, but then will congregate in a screeching, drunken mass at one of Dublin's finest drinking establishments which play cheesy pop music.  Which one, we are as yet unsure of, as we don't like paying in and Howl At The Moon is only free till 11.30.

We would love for you all to join us for much merriment as our season would not have been as great as it was without the support of the Irish Ultimate community in all our fundraising and training events.  If you're interested get in touch with me (0863854202) or any of the other gals, but probably not before 11, and I'll let you know where we are.

If that's not vague, I don't know what is, but the sentiment is there.

Liz

Huck of the Irish!

Tournament report courtesy of Rebecca Wall:

The first annual Huck o’ the Irish women’s ultimate tournament was held on the 25th and 26th of September at the TCD sports grounds in Santry. Thanks to sunshine, burritos and a good stereo system, a great time was had by all! Four teams participated in this year’s tournament: Jabba the Huckers, Little Miss Sunshine, Rebel Ultimate, and a fantastically spirited pickup team.

Little Miss Sunshine faced stiff competition right from the very start, squaring off against Jabba in the first game on Saturday. Although hard fought on both sides, LMS overcame some first half ‘dropsies’ to win the match 12-4. The second game against the pickup team was some solid, fun ultimate and although LMS won the Frisbee side of the match, the pickup team won a resounding victory in the subsequent dance-off. LMS slunk off to practice their moves.

On Sunday, LMS played the Rebel ladies first, in a fast-paced and well spirited running game. The Rebel side played well, but LMS took the match. Going into the final against Jabba, LMS knew they would have to step up their concentration and intensity. The match was intense on both sides, with great plays from both teams, but once again, LMS kept on the pressure to hold Jabba to a final score of 17-3.

Congratulations to tournament MVP Liz Schaffalitzky, `A' gamer Olly Murphy, and MVP of the Final, Laura McGrath!

Overall, the tournament was a great success. LMS took the trophy, Rebel won spirit, and all the teams are hoping that next year’s Huck O’ the Irish will be even bigger! Many thanks to Fiona and her helpers for their hard work organizing the event.

Day 6 at Worlds

Day 6 and our final 2 games at the world club championships

LMS Vrs Brilliance
Brilliance were a Russian ladies team who were in a similar boat to ourselves having found it difiicult to beat the tough opposition. LMS went into this game fighting from the very beginning, it was a game we deserved to win and I think everyone felt that as we played. Not for one second did the team seem to doubt that we would win the game. The game began well for LMS with 2 points straight away, a trend we were getting good at! We tried a few things on defense knowing that the team had not trained together much before the tournament. This however seemed to work in their favour as they were disorganised so a front force meant they could get free wherever they were cutting. We traded points before Brilliance took the half at 9-8. This time it was different though. Previously we had been less successfull in the second half of games, but this time we were not. It was this attitude and defiance that won the game for us. We converted 9 points in the second half to Brilliances 6 points winning the game 17-15. This was a huge victory for LMS, an Irish womens teams first win at a world club level!!! We got a taste for winning and liked it :)

MVP went to Heather for playing a huge part against a tough zone defence

LMS Vrs QUB
QUB were a canadian team with a sideline full of coaches and managment. They were a loud team and communicated well with eachother. Starting the game like usual we took the first 2 points with Mernagh and Sinead taking the scores. This was followed by a canadian retaliation who also took 2 points. The 1st half conitnued in this manner with QUB taking the half 9-8.
We reminded ourselves that the same had happened the previous game and it did not reflect the final result. With this in mind we stepped it up a gear and played some clever defence using our passive zone against the canadians. This did a huge amount of damage and forced the turnovers we were looking for. LMS dominated the second half scoring 9 points to QUBs 4, final score 17-13 to LMS!!!!!!!

MVP went to Sinead who scored 4 of our 17 goals while also assisting with a pass to Cliodhna who got an amazing layout grab for a score!!

After a hugely successfull day LMS retrested to the comfy couches at the five tent to reflect on their amazingness as a newly formed club and at having beaten their seed to finish 29th!!!!

The following were voted for the week:

MVP: Laura
MSP: Liz, our 8th person, couldnt have done it without her
A-Game: Claire, first year playing, huge potential, already showing great throws and clever defense, runs alot :)

This was quickly followed by Mojitos....

Day 5 at Worlds

Our first game on Thursday was a team we were delighted and excited to play against - Icemi, a UK womens team who had put in impressive performances winning Tour 1&2.

LMS Vrs Iceni
After a team meeting the night before we came out to the game with no regrets and full of enthusiasm for the game. This game was a battle for 17th place which LMS wanted and believed we could take. This game was intense from the start and both teams traded up to 5-5 before Iceni took the lead scoring 2 in a row with former Irish player Catherine Gainey throwing the assist to make it 7-5 to Iceni. These 2 points made the difference in the first half and we traded until Iceni tookm the half at 9-7.
Icenis experience and numbers proved to be vital in the second half and LMS began to struggle to convert points. Iceni kept their cool on offense and intensity on defensive and won the game 17-10. However LMS put in a massive performance and it was a far cry from the game the previous evening. It was the fresh start we needed.

MVP went to SJ who never stopped working to get free for the disc. She runs on Duracell bateries.

LMS Vrs Copenhagen
Following a long rest in the shade, some body comparisons (monkey arm Sparky, funny elbowed Sandy...) and lots of water LMS warmed up for their game against Copenhagen, a team they had played at Brugge and lost to by 1 point! An enjoyable hard fought for game was what we expected. With temperatures soaring we decided to try and conserve energy by staying in the shade as much as possible while making the drills short and sweet.
LMS started the game well and took the first 2 points confidently. This was followed by a counter attack by Copenhagen to bring the score back to evens. After trading for another 2 Copenhagen continued to get a steady increase of points, we scored 1, they scored 2, we scored 2, they scored 3. They played a game similar to our own with lots of running and very little poaching on defense. They took the half 9-6.
This was the first game LMS struggled with their numbers coupled with the increasing temperatures against a team that liked to cut hard and fast as well as throw breaks and hucks. They continued to score the big points and dominated the second half to win the game 17-8.
This was a tough game for LMS as we felt we gave it our best, we physically couldnt give it any more then we did.

2 players that worked tirelessy were Fiona (boxer) and Claire who got joint MVPS

LMS retreated to the dorms tired and confused but even more determined to win our final 2 games on Friday in order to beat our seeding and take home some well desevred wins, food and sleep became the priority of the remainder of the day.

 Deirdre playing Ninja :)

Day 4 at Worlds

Apologies for the delay in blogging!

Okay, so after cancelling all games on Day 3 due to the weather the organisers rescheduled games for the following day. Games however were shortened to 80mins or games to 15 with 5min half times

The schedule for the day was as follows:
8.30am LMS Vrs Vima (Finland)
1pm LMS Vrs Honey (Australia)
3.45pm LMS Vrs Tequilla Boom Boom (Italy)

Game 1:
LMS started the game slowely and conceded the first 3 points of the game. A time out was called and LMS put their heads together, it was time to wake up and screw the noodle on! The motivation and concentration increased and we fought hard to trade points with Vima right up until the half meaning they still had a 3 point lead at half (score 5-8).
Unfortunately we peaked too early and couldnt maintain our intensity on defense while converting our Offense points in the second half. Vima started strong taking the first 2 points, while LMS made another attenpt to get back on track by scoring the third point it just wasnt to be, Vima took the final 5 points with relative ease.
It was a disappointing start to the day and a trend we were not keen to continue. As we were playing on the same pitch again we had time to think, reflect on our game and get motivated before playing the Australians...

MVP for the game goes to the 2 red heads Mernagh and Boxer who fought hard throughout the game

Game 2:
After warming up with some singing and dancing as well as the usual drills LMS were ready to give it socks against Honey. Within the first 3 points LMS had taken the lead following 2 beautiful assists from Heather to both Sinead and Jen. We traded with Honey for another 2 points and then let them catch up by scoring 2 in a row. As both teams stepped it up a gear the score remained even 5-5....7-7...Honey took the half 8-7 after a long tough point.
After a tough first half LMS spent their 5 mins in the shade rehydrating, the temperature was increasing and we were beginning to feel the heat. We entered into the second half on defense and couldnt prevent a score from Honey to take a 2 point lead.  We came back with 1 on offense after a sweet pass from Mernagh to Laura to bring the score back to 9-8 but honey continued to put pressure on the Irish and continued to maintain a lead, they finished the game 15-12. This was a hugely enjoyable, spirited and competitive game and is one we will all remember fondly.

MVP went to Heather who was consistent with her passes and hucks on offense and a demon on defense :)

Game 3:
Unfortunately this story does not have a happy ending and this was a game many of us would like to forget. However on the plus side we definitely took alot from this game and it showed us where our weaknesses are which gives us something to focus on in the future.
Tequilla boom boom won the toss and chose to start on defense which proved to be their best tactic. The started with and aggressive Zone defense with a chase and close wall of 3. This immediatley intimidated us and forced turnovers which had not happened to us previously.  They took the 4 first points easily before we called a timeout. Having used our time out successfully we scored the first point to make the score 4-1. However our defense was not enough to prevent the Italian ladies from breaking and hucking the disc cleverly. This was clearly a team that had played alot together as they were able to read eachother extremely well. They took the half 8-1.
The second half proved to be better for LMS and we took 4 points on offense. This was not enough to stop the Italian ladies who were on a role after having previously difficult games. They came together well and took a well deserved win 15-5. We vow to improve on that score line the next time we meet them...

Day 3 at Worlds- washout!

Today at 1pm we were scheduled to play Vimma, a Finnish ladies team. Unfortunately as we started warming up a giant thunder storm rolled in. All games that were being played had to be stopped and everyone retreated to the local club house to get in from the lashing rain and  lightening. This was totally unexpected so needless to say staff werent too sure about what was going to happen next. While we were waiting for the storm to move on we were told we would be playing straight away, this then changed to a later time to not actually being allowed to play on the pitch at all as there was too much water logging on it!

This was not what we wanted to hear but there wasnt much we could do about so we made the most of our time together as a team and had a big sing song with hits such as Living on a Prayer, Total eclipse of the Heart, Bohemian Rhapsody, I got chills, Faith and Too good to be True. It was the lift we all needed after what had been a pretty miserable start to the day.

LMS gathered for an hour of throwing and some drills instead and we now expect there to be 3 games tomorrow...heres hoping!!

Day 2 at Worlds

Day 2

Game 1: Storm vrs LMS

Unfortunately this day didnt start out as planned as there was a freak accident during our warm up which resulted in Liz having to go to the hospital to get stitches in her hand after slipping on a badly placed piece of wood :(
Trying to put this aside we got into the game and started trading points with Storm, a canadian womens team. It was the start we were looking for. We had seen the team using their hucks alot and decided to front them which worked really well for a few points. As soon as they realised we liked the same they also adjusted their defence which led to errors on our part. We started making mistakes under pressure and they gained a lead and took the half. This trend continued into the second half and much to the frustration of LMS the game finished 17-7 to Storm. It was a game that we didnt play our best in due to our own mistakes under pressure. This was not a trend we wanted to continue so we took our break, drank lots of water and ate maple syrup biscuits to recouperate.

MVP of the game went to Sparky who always managed to get free and used her flick huck to our advantage throughout this game!

Game 2: LMS vrs Hot Beaches, the home team

Having played and seen hot beaches play before we had an idea of their best throwers and cutters and knew what they liked to do. Before the game we pumped ourselves up with a song "Im walking on sunshine" with an aggressive L..M...S HUGH at the end! From the very beginning we fronted them. This team had some serious huckers who loved to throw it deep, we decided we weren't going to let them in this game. Our defence was working really well with lots of pressure on the handlers and cutters. On offence we played 3-4 or 4 back when they put on their zone defence which they have used to their advantage on other teams. I am happy to say that we destroyed their zone with chilly offence and lots of passes meaning they we forced to change their defence. As we are a fast athletic team they decided to use poaches and switches on defence instead on challenging us for speed. This threw us for a bit as they cut off our open throws by poaching in the lanes while putting a strong mark on the handler. Offensively they put a few score aways throwing break throws, mainly IO's. This game felt tight the whole way through and I think their experience beat us in the end. The score at 17-9 doesnt reflect how the game felt and it was definitely our best performance to date. The next time we play them I imagine the score will be alot closer!

MVP of the game was Laura

Day 1 at Worlds!!

Hey all,

Apologies for the delay in posting, just got internet access!

Heres a quick update on whats been happening so far!

Day 1:
LMS played the mighty UNO, a japanese womens team seeded 2nd at the tournament. This was a great first game to the tournament and the japanese came out fighting with a high intensity game, quick passes and lots of speed. They took the first few points comfortably but after a beautiful cross field huck from Mernagh to Sinead who hucked a perfect backhand to Laura we got our first score in the endzone!! Woop woop!! With the heat soaring at 30degrees LMS struggled to put any more points on the board before half time. We failed to stop the japanese offence and were not as confident with our own offence with layout blocks from the UNO defense.
We came out after half time with a new game plan, to look for our deep option and huck it alot! This was the one weakness we felt we could exploit with UNO. Using this tactic we managed another 3 points in the second half against the current world champions, this game finished 17-4 to UNO. They were inspiring to play against and the game was well spirited, we took all their tactics with us so watch out for LMS next year UNO :)

MVP of the Day Fiona Mernagh who had a savage game!!!

Celebrate with LMS :)

To celebrate our last session before Worlds LMS would like to invite those who have helped us by playing against us or with us over the last few months. We hope you will challenge us with a final game from 8-9pm in St. Annes park and you will be rewarded with cake, goodies and fizzy drinks. We really do appreciate everyone who helped out, it will make a huge difference for us at worlds!!

LMS finish 5th at Tour

8 LMS players Sparky, Sinead, Jen, Claire, Deirdre, Laura, Liz and Sj, plus 3 lovely pickups Claire, Bex and Sarah took on the teams at Tour 2 on June 19th, 20th. LMS started with 6th seed putting us in a power pool of seeds 5-8th. We kicked off on Saturday morning at 9.30am against Iso. After suffering a bad start with 2 points down LMS called a time out and decided it was time to "screw the noodle on". We played alot better and began converting our points and made less mistakes on offense. This resulted in our first win of the day! This gave us the start we needed and we continued in the same fashion to beat Brighton in sudden death, Swift and Crown Jewles. The day was gusty and it gave us a chance to practice our man and zone D's, both of which needed attention. After a long day with 4 tough games we finished top of our pool and gained the 5th place position.

We had a crazy evening of eating glorious mega sudaes with icecream, brownie, profiterole, flakes, chocolate sauce and cream while watching Denmark beat Camaroon. This was followed by a bedtime movie - Cruel intentions which finished at the late hour of 11.30pm!! After a great sleep had by some and a not so great sleep had by others we awoke at 7am to eat as much free breakfast as possible before heading to the pitches for our toughest and most important game so far.

To get into the top 4 we had to beat Nice Bristols which consisted of a team similar in standard to our own. A mix of experienced solid handlers and throwers with inexperienced but fast athletic recievors. Unfortunately it wasnt to be for LMS. Early in the game they got a lead due to break throws and some luck which they managed to retain for the rest of the game. It was the game we had be looking for, tough but good for LMS. We took alot from it and look forward to playing them again with our full squad.

This left us fighting to retain our 5th place position which meant playing Swift and Brighton again. LMS won these games fairly well to retain 5th which it seems is our lucky number this season, 5th at Worlds perhaps??

MVP: Laura
MSP: Our pickup Sarah who was great all weekend
A-game: Sparky (represented by apple core :) )
